Chapter Eighteen

"W ell, don't you look like death warmed over, Mr. Reynard?" Domini said when Reynard sauntered across the crowded parking lot behind the club.

The lights mounted on tall poles at each corner of the lot were bright and white, causing Reynard's long, lean shadow to spear out behind him. Had he lost weight overnight? He certainly looked lean and mean in the tight jeans and body-hugging black T-shirt, but there was a hollowness to his already austere features. She thought he looked tired under the swagger. Seeing him put her on edge. Worse, it made her worry about him. The dichotomy was so disturbing, she couldn't help her tart comment.

His reply was equally snide as he reached the black SUV parked next to the rear entrance. "Thank you for your concern, Ms. Lancer."

On closer inspection, she added, "You're looking extremely pale and pasty as well."

"The lights do nothing for my complexion," Reynard said as he joined her in leaning against the hood.

Large men in shirts with SECURITY stenciled front and back patrolled a perimeter between the fans and the Lincoln Navigator parked next to the rear entrance. The Lancer team was spaced around the SUV. Domini and Reynard faced the growing crowd while they talked to each other.

"And you're wearing sunglasses at night again. Why is that?"

"Trying to fit in with the milieu."

"I don't see anyone else in sunglasses."

"It's the best I can do to appear cool, as I have no interest in body piercings or full-body tattoos. This place look like the set of The Fast and the Furious to you?"

She swept a look around the lot. "No rice rockets. More girls."

"I suppose."

Alec wondered if his effort to sound laconic was working. Domini had sniped at him the moment she saw him. He sniped back. Vampire courtship. Snapping and snarling could come next. And after that…

This exchange could prove dangerous.

Duty. Discipline. Responsibility. He lived by these standards, but right now, his insistence on fulfilling his obligations as Prime and Lancer operative was maybe not the best idea he'd ever had. Help from the elders and pure stubbornness had gotten him here. But now that he was here, he was having trouble looking Domini in the face. His feral imagination had gone into overload today, and the harsh fantasy images he'd conjured not only haunted him, they embarrassed him.

But he couldn't bear not to be with her. It was ridiculous, since his head told him she'd be safer with him elsewhere, but he kept returning to her side.

Did she really need protecting from anyone but him? Was he imagining a threat to her to legitimize being near her?

Domini had hoped Reynard wouldn't show. Was her belief that he was hiding his true nature and intentions her way of denying…what? Desire? Fear of losing control? Fear of losing herself in the throes of passion?

She scoffed at such an old-fashioned notion. Who said passion required loss of control, of self?

Holly. And not just in her songs; Holly lived with total commitment to her emotions.
